Creativity, Innovation... Failure

FoldIt

This application is for those who have a little bit of time on their hands (or not..) and is the next logical step to SETI@Home and the likes: Social farming! Don't use idle computers, use idle users!

The goal of the game is easy enough: solve the puzzle with the best possible solution while competing with fellow players to earn points. The twist? By solving the puzzle you're actually helping scientists figure out the shape of proteins and by doing so identifying their function.

The usual approach would be to use supercomputers to evaluate how a protein is folded but there are so many degrees of liberty that only a small fraction of all possible solutions can be explored... and humans do sometimes come up with better solutions!

For more information and to download the application, visit http://fold.it/portal/
Here is the article that made me discover the project http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20026811.700-how-online-games-are-solving-uncomputable-problems.html

Browser(Star) Wars!

There’s a new web browser coming up! No, it’s not the release of Firefox 3. Nah, it’s not the future version of Internet Explorer 8 neither the famous Opera browser. Is it Apple’s Safari? No.

It’s called AT&T Pogo, seems like there is still space for newcomers. Oh no, not another browser to support? Maybe but for now they are using Mozilla’s rendering technology (same as Firefox) so you web programmers should be fine.

It’s not just another browser has you may think. They are bringing the same feel-like ITune’s cover flow technology but for browsing. In my opinion it’s a great evolution has tabbing was brought mainstream by Firefox (…actually Opera in 2000). Is it really worth it? Hmmm…

Like all great software they have to go through BETA testing.  In order to test yourself the new browser you will have to register on their web site and wait for an invitation. (Arggg, I still didn’t get mine.) But if you can’t wait check this video.
